Looking westward toward Juniper Dunes Wilderness
Bunch Grass & Dunes |
Bunch grass was the original indigenous grass
of the area. Although capable of luxuriant growth in certain soil
conditions, bunch grass can grow under very harsh conditions. Sage
and bunch grass would often exist together in a sort of mutual standoff
that left more soil exposed than not. Dust storms were common in
the area.
The early settlers touted bunch grass' quality as stock fodder, but soon began planting imported grasses which provided more solid ground cover. |
