Juniper Dunes
Juniper Dunes Wilderness Area northeast of Pasco, Washington covers about 7000 acres and is home to the largest sand dunes in the state.   The dunes are controlled by the Bureau of Land Management and are entirely surrounded by private land.  Wheat farms predominate, but some of the more rugged areas are used as range land.

Bunch Grass & Dunes
Bunch grass was the original indigenous grass of the area.  Although capable of luxuriant growth in certain soil conditions, bunch grass can grow under very harsh conditions.  Sage and bunch grass would often exist together in a sort of mutual standoff that left more soil exposed than not.  Dust storms were common in the area.
The early settlers touted bunch grass' quality as stock fodder, but soon began planting imported grasses which provided more solid ground cover.
A passing shower speckles the sand.
