First Spring Outting

From the truck, we climbed about 150 feet, then dropped down to an abandoned SP&S Rwy track, & walked north on the roadbed through a 1200 yard tunnel to come out near the foot of Devil's Canyon.

This freshly bloomed balsam-root was about 50 ft. above the RR roadbed.

Looking across Devil's Canyon from the hill we just walked through. The RR roadbed is on the left.

Farther up the hill, some new bunch grass is off to a promising start.

Here's our route scrawled on a terraserver image. The black lines are my sidekick's route.
Dotted line is the 1200 yard tunnel. We parked at elev. 670 &  we got up to about 940 & down to 600 ft.

We had some daylight left, so after leaving Devil's Canyon, we went north and checked out parts of Staircase Rapids, which we'll hike through later this summer.
